Radisson RED, Greenwich

Radisson opened a new Greenwich hotel under its Radisson RED brand, which it describes as ‘an upscale, select service hotel brand presenting a playful twist on the conventional. Radisson RED hotels inject new life into hospitality through informal services where anything goes, a social scene that’s waiting to be shared, and bold design that kick-starts the fun.’

Getting away from the chain-hotel brandspeak, they’re basically trying to create a funky, slightly edgy boutique-style hotel, as much as a global hotel brand can do. The result is a very comfortable hotel, certainly rather less conventional than many hotel brands, but staying here won’t get you into next year’s style bible of who to watch.

Located on Tunnel Avenue near the Blackwall Tunnel and the O2 Arena, it’s not the most attractive setting for an hotel, but convenient all the same. It’s taken a while to open: in 2011 there were plans for an Ibis hotel here, and when that didn’t happen, the building was covered in scaffolding for some years.

Much of the decor is black or grey, both in the lobby and bar and restaurant areas that follow on from each other on the ground floor, but also the 70 guest rooms, which are spacious and typically have dark grey curtains, a dark brown wood laminate floor and dark brown wood desk. Rooms also have a safe, an ironing board, iron, tea and coffee and a kettle, but no swish coffee machine.

There are riverside views, but also rooms with views of the Blackwall Tunnel approach road – which I suppose is handy if you’re trying to work out when the traffic is light and you can leave.

There are playful elements to brighten up the space, whether a vintage telephone in a guest room, or faux oil paintings of Tudors on Piaggio scooters in the lobby. The lobby also has a pool table and hanging baskets of plastic plants, some vases and ornaments, and shelves with a few art or rock books on the likes of David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, and the autobiography of local lad Jools Holland (if the books haven’t been nicked yet).

There’s a small car park, and North Greenwich underground is within walking distance.
